Hand-crafted in Helsinki, Finland.
This work is a continuation of the Shaped by fire project (2017). The artist revives (and develops further) the Finnish technique (from the 1960s) of achieving carbonised wood texture in glass, experimenting with wood and glassblowing processes to master the synergy of elements.
Mould making, wood work, hot work, cold work: by the artist herself.
Hot work, mouth blowing into a wooden mould: by the master glassblower.
Approximate dimensions: 8 cm x 8 cm x 9,5 cm height + 8 cm x 8 cm x 6,5 cm height. Materials: colour glass (lead-free crystal), up-cycled alder wood.
Moulds for glassblowing are made out of salvaged local Finnish timber, consciously selected by the designer to achieve a variety of structures. The wooden lids are then made out of scrap material left after producing the glass moulds. Hand-drawn shapes milled with a CNC machine and then sanded by the designer’s hand. Each wooden lid is a unique pair to each unique glass piece, no shape is the same.
